REX INGRAM BRONZE SCULPTURES

Rex Ingram (1893-1950), the great silent film director, actor and writer also attended the Yale School of Art and was a gifted artist. This trainimg made him a leading producer, along with von Stroheim, a close friend, of stunning visual images in his films, that are, in some cases, more memorable than the plots themselves. Examples are Valentino's tango in "THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYSPE", Alice Terry's execution scene in "MARE NOSTRUM", and the decadence of the elite ruling class in "SCARAMOUCHE", portrayed by a frilly, over made-up, puffed, pock cheeked gentleman sipping Cognac out of a tiny chalice through lipstick stained puckered lips. Many of these scenes are filmed in moody Rembrandt lighting effects brought about by the genius of his regular cameraman, John Seitz, each frame forming a "painting in motion".

His drawings and sketches, for his films or given as gifts, are rare enough themselves, but his sculpture work has been unknown and unseen, since the few pieces he produced remained with his widow, Alice Terry, until her death in 1987.

We are pleased to have found, and kept together, three known statues Ingram made, shown in rare photo images taken of him in his studio in the 1940's

Each work is cast in bronze. The largest is the kneeling nude which is over two feet tall and over a foot wide and deep at the base, signed and dated 1927. She may well be in one of his last three films.
The standing nude is two feet tall and is signed on the base and stamped '50', which may mean this is the last piece he worked on as he died in July of that year.
The torso is 23 inches tall on it's base and is signed. It also has the C. VALSUANI mark, a very prestigious Paris foundry used by most of the great sculptors of the century. Although undated, it should date to the Nice period which ended in 1934.
The two females show his strong African-Arab influences, as he lived and worked on the Continent for MGM from the mid 20's to the early 30's, in his studio at Nice, France.
