Bell & Howell 2709B Studio Camera rig delivered to Goldwyn Studios on Sept. 20, 1919 and after the merger to MGM thus used on "Ben Hur" and other classics. This camera, an early Unit One sits on it's original rackover plate, on a geared head mounted on it's wooden B&H tripod. It is powered by the earliest type B&H motor (serial # 5) and has a 400' film magazine atop (stenciled 'SAMUEL GOLDWYN STUDIOS')as well as an early dated 1000' magazine. Also equipped with a rare crank counter, four lenses, power cord with switch and includes trunk, illustrated lubrication poster (24"x36") and copy of the original invoice. It is in working order and appears to have every option available at the time. Period updates include a Mitchell side range viewer, aluminum spreader, matte boxes with mounting hardware and a box of glass plates with paintbrush for FX work. This model camera was the workhorse of the industry from it's inception in 1912 to the dawn of sound. Most were later cut and modified for use in animation making complete original units very desirable and rare.
