Gabby Hayes hat from " THE DARK COMMAND" Republic 1940. Republic's early attempt at a grade 'A' film is a fine effort that featured the only teaming of John Wayne and Roy Rogers in any film. Co starring Claire Trevor, fresh from her success with Wayne in STAGECOACH the year before, and Walter Pidgeon with Marjorie Main and Gabby in support. Little survives from this film nor any of this period from any Gower Gulch studio much less a piece from the most famous sidekick of them all. Gabby made many films with Wayne previous to this at Monogram (using a different character's name) and after this would become closely associated with Rogers as he grew more important at the studio as well as others. The hat has his name inscribed in gold as made for him by Eddy Brothers of California. |
