1934 Columbia Studios Academy Award For Best Picture Of The Year "IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT".
This miniature Oscar was made by Gorham & Co. for Columbia Pictures to mark their first major win and distributed to those who were responsible for making the picture. This one has the normal anniversary plaque removed and the recipient named on a replacement one stating 'HAROLD E JONES, EXPLOITATION', the term referring to the department that does the PR Campaigns.
Most of these statues are found as having been broken across the ankles and repaired. Also, they are usually found lacking much of their original finish. This one offers much of it's luster and has never been broken. Estimates vary on how many were made or survive, with figures from a dozen to near 150. In recent years, with their values now in the several thousands of dollars, there have been but a handful offered. The most recent auction of one took place in London at Christie's in December of 2002 where it set a new mark of nearly $6,000. Most have sold in the $2500 range.
